SUMMARY:CDA Toronto ON - Book Launch – 2 books – One Past and One Present
DESCRIPTION: Book Launch of Two books on Palestine\nOne Past and One Present; Only One Reality\nAn Oral History of the Palestinian Nakba\nedited by Nahla Abdo and Nur Masalha\nfeaturing a reading by Nahla Abdo and contributor Chandni Desai \nPay No Heed to the Rockets: Palestine in the Present Tense\nby Marcello Di Cintio \nOral History:\nIn 2018\, Palestinians mark the 70th anniversary of the Nakba\, a mass expulsion that saw more than 750\,000 people uprooted and forced to flee their homes in 1948. Even today\, the bitterness and trauma of the Nakba remains raw\, and it has become the pivotal event both in the shaping of Palestinian identity and in galvanizing their resistance to occupation. \nEfforts at preserving the memory of the Nakba have resulted in an unparalleled body of rich oral testimony\, with which historians and other scholars have been able to tell the story of this epochal event through the voices of the Palestinians who lived it. This multidisciplinary collection uses oral history as a means of uncovering new insights both into Palestinian experiences of the Nakba and into the wider dynamics of the ongoing situation. In drawing together Palestinian accounts from 1948 with those of the present day\, the book also confronts the idea of the Nakba as an event consigned to the past\, instead revealing it to be an ongoing process aimed at the erasure of Palestinian history and memory. \nPay No Heed to the Rockets:\nMarcello Di Cintio first visited Palestine in 1999. Like most outsiders\, the Palestinian narrative that he knew had been simplified by a seemingly unending struggle\, a near-Sisyphean curse of stories of oppression\, exile\, and occupation told over and over again. \nIn Pay No Heed to the Rockets\, he reveals a more complex story\, the Palestinian experience as seen through the lens of authors\, books\, and literature. Using the form of a political-literary travelogue\, he explores what literature means to modern Palestinians and how Palestinians make sense of the conflict between a rich imaginative life and the daily tedium and violence of survival. \n—\nNeed to know:\n– Doors open at 6:50\n– Free admission\n– Wheelchair Accessible\n– Please avoid using strong-scented products due to sensitivities

SUMMARY:USA Boston MA -Remembering and Resisting: 70 Years of Ongoing Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Palestinians and their allies in Boston are marking the 70th commemoration of the Nakba – the catastrophic Israeli ethnic cleansing of Palestine. In 1948\, almost a million Palestinians were violently dispossessed of their homes and land by Zionist settler colonialists. The emerging Israeli state stripped Palestinians of their possessions and livelihood. Many Palestinians were expelled or fled to neighboring areas and have struggled to survive and return ever since. Those who managed to stay in their homes have been subjected to Israeli rule and continue to be treated as second-class citizens today. \nSeventy years later\, the Nakba continues. From Gaza to the West Bank to Israel\, from refugee camps to the diaspora\, Palestinians have continued to experience gradual genocide and dispossession in numerous ways. As Israelis celebrate\, for the seventieth time\, the anniversary of their “independence” from their settler colonial sponsor\, Palestinians mark their forced expulsion and loss of their livelihood and homeland. \nThe undersigned groups have thus united and organized “Remembering and Resisting the 70 years of Ongoing Nakba” to draw the attention of Bostonians to the Palestinian experience of the Nakba. Our goal is to draw attention to the many and varied ways in which Palestinians have encountered and continued to resist Israeli apartheid and ethnic cleansing. \nOrganized by: Palestinian Community of Boston\, joined by the Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine\, Boston-wide SJP\, Grassroots International\, Jewish Voice for Peace-Boston\, Massachusetts Peace Action\, Unitarians Universalists for Justice in the Middle East\, and United for Justice with Peace. \nThe exhibit will be displayed on Saturday\, May 12. The schedule is as follows: \n11:30 – Exhibit and Museum in Copley Square (Boston) \n12:30 – Solemn Procession Commemorating the March of Return through Downtown Crossing \n1:00 – Speak-out at Park Street Station

SUMMARY:FREE WEBINAR - Canadians in 1948 Palestine: Local Responsibility for the Nakba
DESCRIPTION:Recent images from the Gaza Strip–at once heart-wrenching and inspiring–are a powerful reminder that seventy years later\, the Palestinian refugee crisis grinds on. But what of the origins of this crisis? \nRegister here for this special online presentation. \nThe mass expulsion of Palestinians in 1948 can no longer be denied. But while the facts are more and more widely acknowledged\, even in Israel\, in Canada the discussion lags behind. Hundreds of Canadians travelled to Palestine in 1948 to fight for the Zionist armed forces. The evidence suggests that some of them were involved in grievous human rights abuses\, including the massacre of Palestinian civilians. The evidence–from both Palestinian testimony and declassified Israeli archives–is in fact overwhelming. \nAn honest discussion of this history is long overdue. \nThis local burden of responsibility should inform our commemoration of 1948. Some in Canada are adding insult to injury by continuing to bury this history while celebrating seventy years since Israel’s establishment. But the 1948 expulsion of Palestine’s native population\, which paved the way for Israel’s development\, was indeed a nakba (catastrophe). \nJoin IJV for a discussion of the harsh reality of 1948 Palestine and the Canadian share of responsibility for it. \n*Dan Freeman-Maloy is a researcher and activist based in Montreal. He holds a PhD from the University of Exeter and has written for publications ranging from Mondoweiss to Race & Class and the Journal of Palestine Studies. His work on Western involvement in the Palestine war of 1948 is based on research conducted in Britain\, Canada\, and Palestine/Israel\, including in the Central Zionist Archives in Jerusalem.
