SUMMARY:TPFF 2023 Nakba Commemoration: "Recovery" Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:TPFF will mark the 75th year of the ongoing Nakba with a free screening of the documentary film Recovery directed by Rashid Masharawi. \nRashid Masharawi takes us on a special journey across the Palestinian port city of Jaffa\, where his father was forced to leave in the 1948 exodus. Life in this jewel of the Mediterranean is brought to life by the inventive use of photographs\, oral testimony and rich sound design in this simple and beautiful documentary. Viewers are taken on an absorbing stroll through the streets of Jaffa as remembered by Taher Al-Qalyubi\, who captured his memories of his beloved city on VHS tape. Although\, Taher died six month before Masharawi “met” him\, there is a deep connection to this man who shares the same history has his father and grandfather.\nThrough his narration\, Marshawi’s memories of the city brings to life the waves on Jaffa’s shore\, the sounds of its streets\, and the sweetness of its inhabitants and its spirit. Recovery is a splendid cinematic experience that attempts to bridge the border between time and space on a tour of stories and photos of Jaffa from 1930 to 1948.\nThis event is in partnership with The University of Toronto’s Hearing Palestine\, Cinema Studies\, Urban Studies\, and Centre for the Study of the United States.

Even today\, the bitterness and trauma of the Nakba remains raw\, and it has become the pivotal event both in the shaping of Palestinian identity and in galvanizing their resistance to occupation. \nEfforts at preserving the memory of the Nakba have resulted in an unparalleled body of rich oral testimony\, with which historians and other scholars have been able to tell the story of this epochal event through the voices of the Palestinians who lived it. This multidisciplinary collection uses oral history as a means of uncovering new insights both into Palestinian experiences of the Nakba and into the wider dynamics of the ongoing situation. DESCRIPTION:Recent images from the Gaza Strip–at once heart-wrenching and inspiring–are a powerful reminder that seventy years later\, the Palestinian refugee crisis grinds on. But what of the origins of this crisis? \nRegister here for this special online presentation. \nThe mass expulsion of Palestinians in 1948 can no longer be denied. But while the facts are more and more widely acknowledged\, even in Israel\, in Canada the discussion lags behind. Hundreds of Canadians travelled to Palestine in 1948 to fight for the Zionist armed forces. The evidence suggests that some of them were involved in grievous human rights abuses\, including the massacre of Palestinian civilians. The evidence–from both Palestinian testimony and declassified Israeli archives–is in fact overwhelming. \nAn honest discussion of this history is long overdue. \nThis local burden of responsibility should inform our commemoration of 1948. Some in Canada are adding insult to injury by continuing to bury this history while celebrating seventy years since Israel’s establishment. But the 1948 expulsion of Palestine’s native population\, which paved the way for Israel’s development\, was indeed a nakba (catastrophe). \nJoin IJV for a discussion of the harsh reality of 1948 Palestine and the Canadian share of responsibility for it. \n*Dan Freeman-Maloy is a researcher and activist based in Montreal. He holds a PhD from the University of Exeter and has written for publications ranging from Mondoweiss to Race & Class and the Journal of Palestine Studies. His work on Western involvement in the Palestine war of 1948 is based on research conducted in Britain\, Canada\, and Palestine/Israel\, including in the Central Zionist Archives in Jerusalem.
